Faux Chalkboard

I made these two cards using the Faux Chalkboard technique, which is very popular and so easy to do. You need just these few simple things to create the look; black card stock, an Embossing Buddy, a white watercolor pencil, Whisper White Craft ink and your favorite stamp set.  I used the Little Friends  and Patterned Party as the main stamp sets on these two cards.  Both are retiring on June 3rd so you'll want to get them before their gone!

Faux Chalkboard Birthday Card
To start, you just tap your Embossing Buddy on the black card stock, which will make it look like a dusty chalkboard.  Then, you use a white water color pencil to draw doodles or lines around the edges.  I used the Simply Scored Borders Scoring Plate to make the fun designs.  You'll also use the pencil to give your stamped images a finished hand-drawn look by going around the edges after the ink has had a chance to dry.  By doing this, the images no longer looked stamped on, they look like they were drawn with chalk.  Hence the faux chalkboard technique!  To make part of the images on both cards pop, I used white embossing powder and a heat tool.  You'll notice the sentiment on the first card is embossed as it the Happy Birthday To You banner on the second card.

Creating Journals from Composition Notebooks

I've had so much fun lately creating journals from basic composition notebooks.  Here's the first journal I created.  I was inspired to create it after seeing the cover of Stampin' Up!'s Spring Catalog. I really like how it came out so I taught how to make it in my Special Projects class last Sunday.
Oh Hello Journal
After making the first journal, I decided to make two more.  Here they are...
You Are Creative Journal

Tea for Two Journal
They really are very simple to make.  All you need to do is use Crystal Effects to adhere any color card stock you want onto the notebook.  I used a sponge brush to do that and only glued the top section first making sure the card stock was where I needed it to be (because it dries quickly) and then I brushed the remained of the journal cover.  It's important not to get any glue on the black binding part of the notebook or else it will pull tight as it dries and make the cover of the notebook raise up. Once the card stock is glued to the notebook cover, you can trim any excess card stock with Paper Snips  and, finally, sand the edges of the card stock and notebook with the Stampin' Sanding System block to smooth any rough edges.  Once this is done, the card stock and notebook cover look as if they are one piece and you cannot tell the notebook has been covered!  I call this my "canvas" because now I am ready to stamp and embellish it.
